Vertical Hairline Sheila Kay Adams to Perform at UVa-Wise February 3 and 4

Sheila Kay Adams

Sheila Kay Adams, seventh generation ballad singer, storyteller, musician, and author of Come Go Home With Me, will present two performances at The University of Virginia's College at Wise February 3-4.

The performance, which will be followed by a book signing, begins at 7 p.m. in the UVa-Wise Chapel of All Faiths refreshments will be served at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

The public is also invited to attend a performance by Adams at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, February 4, in the UVa-Wise Chapel of All Faiths.

Adams will be joined by her husband Jim Taylor, a noted Civil War historian and musician who has released such CDs as The Civil War Collection, Volumes 1&2, and , his first recording, Come Before Winter, and his latest, One October Morn, which combine traditional Celtic music. Jim and Sheila joined forces for a CD project entitled Christmas on the Mountain, featuring old-time tunes, shaped-note hymns, and Appalachian ballads.

In addition to her public presentations, Adams will be a special guest in several UVa-Wise classes.

Adams comes from the mountains of Western North Carolina where for seven generations she and her family have passed down the tradition of the English, Scottish and Irish ballads that came over with her ancestors in the late eighteenth century. Adams gives her great-aunt Dellie Chandler Norton credit for teaching and inspiring her to become a balladeer.

Copies of books by Adams are available for sale at the UVa-Wise Campus Store and the Wise County Public Library.
