‘Christmas Around the World’ set for Dec. 1 at UVa-Wise
Area children are invited to see how the rest of the world celebrates the holiday season during “Christmas Around the World” at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise in the Fred B. Greear Gymnasium.
Children can travel the world in one night to “visit” Germany, Italy, Ireland, Holland, Mexico and Sweden. Israel and the Hanukkah tradition will also be highlighted. There will be music, food and crafts from each country to educate children about the different ways Christmas is celebrated around the world.
“The Night Before Christmas” will be read again this year by Englishman Darren Manners. Children will also be invited to sing carols.
UVa-Wise students will share facts about celebrations in each country represented. Whether gifts are delivered by Christkind in Germany, Sinterklass in Holland, the ugly witch in Italy or the Christmas gnome in Sweden, the holiday spirit remains the same around the world.
The evening’s festivities will end with a visit from American Santa Claus!
“Christmas Around the World” is sponsored by the Student Virginia Education Association. The event is free for children 12 and younger. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
