"Teaching Everyone's Child: Diversity" is the theme for the 14th Annual Southwest Virginia Early Childhood Conference at The University of Virginia's College at Wise on Saturday, April 22. Featured presenters include Dr. Aldoph Brown, III, a popular motivational speaker and founder of the Wellness Group, Inc., and Emmy award-winning performer Gaia Tossing.

“China”
Teach Chinese culture to children by helping them create mental
pictures. Mrs. Craiger and her husband lived in China for several years.
She will show Chinese artifacts. She will also present a 5-year goal for
teaching the China SOLs more effectively.

“Make-It, Take-It”
Participants will make SOL enrichment and review
learning activities to take back to their classrooms.

“Signing Basics for Teachers”
Gaia will show participants how to sign and
communicate more effectively with hearing

“Make and Take Your Own Felt Board”
Participants will choose to make a felt board
with water, sky, and dinosaurs or meadow, sky,
and farm animals. The first ten people will not
pay a fee; however, after the 10th person enters
the room, the charge is $15.00 per felt board.

"Your Classroom Environment: More Than Just Desks and Chairs”
This workshop will present teachers with a variety of
classroom environments. Teachers will explore how
to use the classroom environment to encourage learning,
prevent discipline problems, and include strategies that encourage
brain compatible research findings. This workshop will also include
ways to organize the classroom on a shoestring budget.

The focus will be positive discipline. Presenter will also
discuss behavior modification projects and how to sneak
SOLs into your management plan. Participants can expect
to interact with others during the workhshop and take away
new and exciting management approaches to use in their classrooms.

“Creating Digital Stories with Photo Story 3"
Attendees will see how easy it is to combine digital images,
voices, text, and music into an amazing movie that can be
shared in many ways. Free software and instructions will be given.

“Teaching Inquiry Based Science Activities”
Activities will be shared that teach scientific concepts and

each grade level and to demonstrating teacher and
child-friendly experiments.

This session will highlight the phonological components
of reading instruction (phonemic awareness and phonics).
Practical research-based strategies and techniques will illustrate
how to expand and enrich word study within a literature-rich environment.

“Gaining Children’s Cooperation: Ideas from
Redirecting Children’s Behavior®”
This session will give information and have discussion on
what discourages children from cooperating. The session
will also show how parents and teachers can use positive
techniques to have better relationships with children.

“Native American Heritage”
This workshop will discuss diversity from the
great-granddaughter of Chief Quanah Parker, the
last free war chief of the Comanche. She was born to a
Comanche mother and a white father. Participants
will also get a glimpse of Comanche storytelling, dance,
music, and crafts.

“Greece: Past and Present”
Kristen Bowen, Dana Middleton, and Mark Middleton went
to Greece in the Fall Semester 2005 with a UVA-Wise group.
They will share a PowerPoint Presentation on Greece that
covers the SOLs for third grade. They also have many items
from Greece for display.

An inspiring story of Beth Timp’s journey through life as told by her father. Beth is now 23 years old and will be present at the workshop to answer questions about her life as a deaf child going through the public school systems.
