UVa-Wise musical ensembles set to entertain with new names, new performances

The concert band and chamber choir at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise began the new academic year with new monikers. The concert band now will be known as the Highland Winds, and the concert choir will be dubbed the Highland Chorale.

Director of Bands Rick Galyean says the name changes reflect the continued growth of the Division of Music, as well as each group’s inclusion of musicians from both the local community and UVa-Wise.

The Highland Winds, directed by Galyean, performs traditional concert band literature. This fall, the ensemble will perform two concerts, which will include student conductors. Great American composers will be featured in the Oct. 11 performance, and seasonal music will be performed Dec. 3. Anyone with band experience is invited to become a member of the Highland Winds.

The Highland Chorale performs classic choral literature. David Volk, assistant professor of music, conducts the ensemble. The Chorale will perform its traditional holiday program Thursday, Dec. 11.

For more information, contact David Volk at 328-0271 or dpv4a@uvawise.edu, or Rick Galyean at 328-0235 or rdg3y@uvawise.edu.
