Three new members join UVa-Wise Board

Three new members have joined The University of Virginia’s College at Wise Board and four current members have been reappointed to four-year terms.

Ronald Flanary

The new Board members are Ronald C. Flanary of Big Stone Gap, F. Wayne Edwards of Wise, and Scott C. McDaniel of Wise.

Ronald C. Flanary, executive director of the LENOWISCO Planning District Commission in Duffield, will fill the unexpired term of former board member Larry Munsey of Kingsport, Tenn. Flanary’s term will extend through June 2007.

Flanary began his career at LENOWISCO in 1975 as a regional planner. He was named senior planner in 1978, director of planning in 1979, and, in 1991, was named the commission’s fourth executive director. He serves on several local and regional boards including the Crooked Road Committee, which he chairs, and the Virginia Coalfield Economic Development Authority.

A 1970 graduate of UVa-Wise, Flanary is the 2001 recipient of the College’s Outstanding Alumni Award. In addition to his professional work, Flanary is an avid photographer, illustrator and author in the field of railroad operations and history. He has authored or co-authored six books and more than 75 articles, a number of which have appeared in national magazines.

F. Wayne Edwards

F. Wayne Edwards, president of the UVa-Wise Alumni Association, will serve a one-year term

as the alumni representative on the Board. A mathematics professor at UVa-Wise from 1968 until his retirement in 2003, Edwards has been an active member of the College since his days as a student here.


A charter member of Sigma Zeta, the College’s honorary math-science society, Edwards was co-director of the Sigma Zeta Math-Science Competition for more than two decades and a faculty advisor to the organization. He also has served as president of the Southwest Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

Edwards has been a member of the Alumni Association Board since 1969 and served a previous term as president. An avid fan of Highland Cavalier athletics, Edwards served on the committee, which studied the feasibility of adding a football program at UVa-Wise. He is the former faculty representative to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. In 2000, Edwards was inducted into the UVa-Wise Athletic Hall of Fame in recognition of his outstanding service and support to the College’s athletic program. .

In addition to his service as president of the Alumni Association, Edwards is also president of the Poor Farm Society, an organization of friends and supporters of UVa-Wise.

Scott C. McDaniel

Scott C. McDaniel of Wise will serve a one-year term as the student member of the UVa-Wise Board. A senior history major at UVa-Wise, McDaniel has worked as a resident advisor and is past president of the Darden Society, the College’s oldest honor society. In 2004, he was named to Phi Alpha Theta, a national history honor society.

In addition to the three new members, four current members were reappointed to four-year terms. Kenneth P. Asbury of Wise, Paul D. Buchanan of Clintwood, Elizabeth G. Cauthen of Charlottesville, and Don R. Pippin of Wise will serve another term on the UVa-Wise Board.
