Commencement 2010 : Keynote Speaker
Virginia Delegate Bud Phillips to speak at UVa-Wise Commencement May 15, 2010
Delegate Clarence “Bud” Phillips will deliver the keynote address during Commencement exercises at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise on Saturday, May 15, 2010.
The public is invited to attend the Commencement ceremony, which begins at 11 a.m. on the Lawn by the Lake, adjacent to the Gilliam Center for the Arts.
“Delegate Phillips is a staunch supporter of education at all levels,” UVa-Wise Chancellor David J. Prior said. “He coined the phrase ‘culture of education’ to highlight his strong belief that educated citizens hold the key to economic growth in Southwest Virginia. We are honored to have Delegate Phillips as our Commencement speaker.”
Delegate Phillips is a 1974 graduate of the College. Elected to the House of Delegates 20 years ago, Phillips was an advocate for the development of the nursing program at UVa-Wise. He helped sponsor legislation that provided the original funding to explore the feasibility of developing a software engineering program at the College. Along with the Southwest Virginia legislative delegation, Phillips has sponsored budget legislation that helped UVa-Wise begin the largest capital improvement phase in the College’s history.
Prior to his election to the House of Delegates, Phillips taught government at Clintwood High School for nine years. He also served as the school’s principal. While working as an educator, Phillips read law and earned his Juris Doctorate Equivalency in 1988. He is a member of the Virginia State Bar and the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association. He maintains a law practice in Castlewood.
Delegate Phillips serves on the Appropriations, General Laws and Privileges and Elections committees in the House of Delegates. His legislative district includes Dickenson County, the city of Norton and part of Wise and Russell counties.
