Marching Highland Cavalier band camp set for August 8-14

The Marching Highland Cavaliers band camp is scheduled for Aug. 8-14 on The University of Virginia’s College at Wise campus.
 
Percussion and colorguard members who will be residing on campus may move into the residence hall between 9 a.m. and noon., Aug. 8. Winds members may move in between 9 a.m. and noon., Aug. 10. 

A detailed schedule for the camp will be distributed upon student arrival.

Any UVa-Wise student or Mountain Empire Community College student with band experience is invited to be a part of the Marching Highland Cavaliers.

UVa-Wise offers innovative technology experiences through summer camps

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise offered two opportunities during summer break for students to sample innovative technology during summer camps.

The camps, both sponsored by the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, provide access to 3-D printers, robots and other innovative technology in Darden Hall.

Winds of the Mountain Empire to perform at UVa-Wise

The Winds of the Mountain Empire, a wind ensemble in residence at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, will present its ninth annual performance in the theater of the Gilliam Center for the Arts on the campus of The University of Virginia’s College at Wise on Sunday, July 20 at 4:00 p.m. Admission to the concert is free.

The 2014 Winds of the Mountain Empire Program will feature the following works:
Star Spangled Banner (arranged by Jack Stamp)
Slava (Leonard Bernstein)
English Folk Song Suite (Ralph Vaughan Williams)
Evensong (James Wardell)

Summer Band Camp concert set for July 10

The Division of Music at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise will present its Summer Band Camp concert on Thursday, July 10, in the Cantrell Hall Banquet Room.

The concert begins at 6:15 p.m. and will feature high school students from Central High School, Eastside High School and Union High School in Wise County, Clintwood High School in Dickenson County, J.I. Burton High School in Norton and Lee High School in Lee County.

The performance will include selections by Frank Erikson, Ludwig Van Beethoven and other noted composers.

UVa-Wise 2014 FINS Fellows

Several students at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise are tackling undergraduate research projects as part of the Fellowship in the Natural Sciences program.

The Department of Natural Sciences began the FINS program 12 years ago with the goal of providing opportunities for our students to fully engage in the scientific endeavor in the same manner as professional scientists.

Staff awards presented at UVa-Wise

Several staff members were recognized during an awards ceremony, June 21, for their many years of service and contributions to The University of Virginia’s College at Wise. 

Rhonda Bentley, Rue Gembach, Janie Hamilton and Martha Necessary were recognized for 35 years of service.

Ray Asher, Glenda Hubbard and Bill Statzer were honored for 25 years of service.

Elizabeth Steele Samerdyke selected to participate in advanced placement program reading

Elizabeth Samerdyke, coordinator for Advising, Retention and Assessment at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise, was selected for a fifth consecutive year to participate in the College Board’s Annual Advanced Placement Reading.

Each June, advanced placement teachers and college faculty members from around the world gather to evaluate and score free-response sections of the advanced placement exams. During the scoring sessions, more than 12,500 advanced placement readers evaluate 4.2 million exams.

Four UVa-Wise students are conducting research as Summer Scholars

Four students at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise are spending the summer researching various projects as part of the Summer Scholars Program.

The C. Bascom Slemp Foundation funds the undergraduate research. The funds are specifically provided for undergraduate research that falls outside the natural sciences.

UVa-Wise receives district advertising award

The University of Virginia’s College at Wise has won a Silver ADDY award at the American Advertising Federation’s District 3 competition for the campaign, ‘Are you UVa-Wise?’

The District 3 award follows receipt of a Gold ADDY Award from the American Advertising Federation of Southwest Virginia earlier this year. District winners are forwarded to the National ADDY Awards competition.

UVa-Wise student killed in I-81 crash

A freshman at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise has died in a two-vehicle crash that happened on Tuesday, June 3 on Interstate 81 in Washington County.
 
According to the Virginia State Police, Abenezer D. Thewdros, 19, of Arlington, Va., died at the scene, along with passengers Abel N. Ayele, 19, of Arlington, Va., and Alemu S. Ameha, 25, of Alexandria, Va.
