Timely Warning and Safety Notice

July 2, 2014 – UVa-Wise Campus Police assisted the Town of Wise Police Department by providing backup in response to a report of a gunshot fired during a reported domestic altercation near campus on Tuesday, July 1 at approximately 6:30 p.m.

The incident occurred on Mason Avenue behind Beeline Market. According to campus police, charges are pending against the person who is believed to have discharged the weapon, and police have confiscated the gun.

Those involved in the incident have no connection to the College, and there were no reports of an injury as a result of the weapon discharge, but the proximity to campus requires the issuance of a safety notice.

Campus police believe that the Town of Wise/Wise County area is a safe community, but crime and violent incidents do occur. We want to remind you of some of the things you can do to protect yourself and your friends if faced with an unexpected situation.

We encourage you to be aware of your surroundings and immediately go inside or to a safe location if you find yourself nearby when a crime is happening. You are also encouraged to report any incidents to campus or local police.

Vice Chancellor Sim Ewing and Campus Police approved distribution of this message.

Tornado drill set for March 20 at 11 a.m.

Since Virginia's statewide tornado exercise was held during spring break, UVa-Wise will participate in a tornado drill on Thursday, March 20 at 11 a.m. You will receive notification from one or more of the following methods: text, phone, siren, web or email. During the drill, people should go immediately to the lowest level of their building and move to a windowless interior room, hallway or closet space, taking a “drop, cover and hold” position.  This means crouching as low as possible to the floor, facing down and covering heads with hands. We will issue an "all clear" a few minutes later to signal the end of the drill.

Faculty, Staff and Students,

Effective February 1, 2013 the 328-COPS line will only be available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for all non-emergencies. In the event of an actual emergency dial 911. For all non-emergencies after hours, please use the following numbers:

Before 7 p.m., residential students should call their community coordinators, after 7 p.m. students should contact the resident advisers on duty

Physical Plant: (276) 973-5513

Wise County Sheriff’s Office (non-emergency) 276-328-3756

In the event of an emergency at anytime and anywhere on campus, students, faculty and staff should dial 911.

The change in the 328-COPS line comes from an initiative to increase safety on campus after incidents at other college and universities. Under the old phone system, there was no communication between Campus Police and other responders since a different communication frequency was being used. We had to get online and compatible with other police agencies, which increases the safety for the faculty, staff and students.

Thanks,

UVa-Wise Campus Community,

As you may know, UVa-Wise has implemented the AlertNow emergency notification system for the entire campus community. In the event of a campus crisis or emergency situation, this system will be used to notify you of the situation or event and give instructions on what to do and/or where to go for additional information.

To make sure everyone has the best and latest personal notification information in the AlertNow system, the College has developed a web page form to allow each campus community member to update their personal contact information for this emergency alert system.

To insure that your latest contact information is in the AlertNow system, please visit http://home.uvawise.edu/AlertNow-emergency-alert-system as soon as possible and read the information there on how to login (with your email username [without @uvawise.edu] and password) and update your voice and SMS text numbers.  Please note that your cell plan's text messaging charges may apply.

Please know that this system will only be used in the event of a campus emergency situation.

If you have any problems logging into the system, please email alertnowadmin@uvawise.edu.

Thank you for your cooperation and have a great week!

March 20 is Virginia's Tornado Preparedness Day  -  March 19, 2012

(to all employees & students)

The Commonwealth of Virginia's Tornado Preparedness Day is Tuesday, March 20.  UVa-Wise is participating in the statewide tornado drill, scheduled to begin at 9:45 a.m. We will test our AlertNow text message, campus email, siren and web notification systems.

During the emergency notification system test you should:

Receive an AlertNow text message if you have signed up for the notification
Receive an e-mail on your campus account
See a test message on the UVa-Wise home page
Hear the siren if you are outdoors
You will receive an all clear message following the drill
You are now required to take any action during the drill, but we encourage you to plan how you would shelter from a tornado.

For further information, visit our emergency preparation webpage at
http://www.uvawise.edu/emergency/emergencyprocedures

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO BE PREPARED FOR A TORNADO
Familiarize yourself with terms that define a tornado hazard:
Tornado Watch: Conditions are favorable for a tornado to form.
Tornado Warning: A tornado has been sighted, is approaching, and you should shelter in place.
Prepare by determining shelter areas from a tornado in advance:
The safest place is in a basement.
If there is no basement, a center hallway, bathroom or closet on the lowest floor is optimal.
Avoid areas with windows.
If you do not have time to go to the lowest floor, pick a place in a hallway in the center of the building.
If you are outside, seek shelter in a sturdy building.
If there is no time to get into a building, lie down flat in a ditch or depression; facing down, cover your head with your hands and arms.
The locker rooms and restrooms on the bottom floor of the Slemp Student Center offer some protection if you are in that building during a tornado

Tornado Warning Notification - February 29, 2012

A tornado warning has been issued for Wise County.  If threatening weather approaches, please seek shelter indoors away from windows in the lower level of the building.  For additional information, please see www.uvawise.edu/emergency .  Thank you.

Campus Wind Advisory - Feb. 17, 2008

Update: Feb. 19, 2008

The Dining Hall will resume normal operations in Cantrell Hall beginning with lunch today. Thank you for your patience and understanding during the interim arrangements.

Update: Feb. 18, 2008

Due to heavy rain and subsequent leaking, dining has been moved from the Cantrell Hall cafeteria. Until further notice, meals will be served in Cantrell Hall's private dining room (Cantrell 206) and the Grille, as well as the Chapel of All Faiths.

Feb. 17, 2008

At approximately 1 p.m. today, a wind shear removed the outer tin on the roof of Cantrell Hall.

No one was injured. All metal removed by the shear landed in a vacant construction site.

Campus police have marked off areas around the first-floor perimeter of Cantrell Hall. Students, faculty, staff and visitors on campus are urged to not cross into these areas marked off by campus police, and to enter Cantrell Hall only via the second-floor entrance.

Because of today's strong winds, all those on campus are advised to remain alert at all times and stay inside when possible.

Meals will continue to be served in Cantrell Hall. Students may be asked to dine in the private dining room (Cantrell 206) or the old Papa Joe's dining area, depending on the condition of the cafeteria dining area.
