Scholarship Funds established
in 2005-2006
was established through a bequest by Dr. Morton O. Alper (1995-realized in 2005). This scholarship shall be used for undergraduate scholarships and shall be awarded to students enrolled in pre-dental or premedical programs designed to prepare the student for a career in the medical field. Preference is to be given to students from Southwest Virginia. A recipient may continue to receive the scholarship throughout four years, provided that he or she maintains a 3.0 or higher GPA.
was established by the family and friends of Ruby Nell Cawood in 2005. The fund will be used to provide scholarships to juniors and seniors participating in the music program at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise. The scholarship gives first preference to students studying piano. Awards are given to students in good academic standing, and may be renewable based on academic performance.
was established by the offices of Student Support Services and Upward Bound at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise and endowed in 2006 in honor of Julia R. Heise, a former proponent and director of the TRIO programs for 28 years. The scholarship will be awarded to entering students or students enrolled who meet the eligibility criteria of TRIO programs (Upward Bound, Talent Search, Student Support Services, Ronald E. McNair, and Educational Opportunity Center.) Students must meet TRIO criteria for eligibility, maintain a GPA of 2.5 or better, have completed college prep curriculum from high school if an entering freshman, and must submit an application and short essay on how TRIO programs benefit students. Awards may be renewable based on maintenance of the GPA requirement, being enrolled full-time, and being in good social standing as defined by the College’s Code of Conduct.
was established in 2006 to provide scholarships to students from Southwest Virginia participating in intercollegiate athletics. Students must demonstrate merit and financial need, and may major in any academic field.
was established via a bequest from Kathleen Miller Strunk to perpetuate the memory of her husband, Thurston, and herself. Awards are made to students who are graduates of and domiciled in and a bona fide resident of one of the Southwest Virginia counties of Washington, Russell, Scott, Lee, Dickenson, Wise, and Buchanan, and the cities of Norton, Virginia and Bristol, Virginia or Tennessee. Students must be a full-time nursing student in good academic standing at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise. Scholarships are renewable.
was established via a bequest from Thelma Phipps Weaver to perpetuate the memory of her husband, D. C. Phipps, and herself. Scholarships aid needy and deserving students, and preference will be given to students from Southwest Virginia.
was established in 2005 by Beth Siphers Wendell in her honor and in memory of her husband, Glenn Hurst Wendell. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of merit and financial need. Preference will be given to students from Southwest Virginia.
was established in 2006 by Joyce R. Winston in honor and memory of her husband, Robert T. Winston. The scholarship will be awarded to worthy and deserving students who meet the eligibility criteria at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.
