Scholarship Funds established in 2004-05
was established in 2005 through the estate of Joseph Troy and Naomi (Adams) Mullins by their children, Peggy J. Dean and James R. Mullins, in honor of James Taylor Adams, a writer, journalist, and ardent supporter of higher education. The scholarship award will be presented to rising juniors or seniors majoring in English or Communications who exhibit excellence in creative or journalistic writing.
was established by the family and friends of Gregory Dean Cantrell in 2005. Greg was a 1971 graduate and former faculty member of UVa-Wise. The fund shall be used to provide scholarships to third and fourth year students with aspirations to a medically related field of study (i.e., pre-medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, or physical therapy) at The University of Virginia's College at Wise. The scholarship gives preference to students from Southwest Virginia in good academic standing.
was created through a bequest from Phyllis Cohen, in memory of her husband, William, in 2004. Scholarships will be awarded to needy and deserving students, giving preference to students who do not have the means to pay in whole or in part the costs at the University of Virginia 's College at Wise.
was established by family and friends of D.P. and Leta Davis in 2004 in their honor and memory. The scholarship gives preference to students from Wise County and Southwest Virginia.
was established by the Napoleon Hill Foundation in 1997 and endowed in 2004 in honor and memory of Napoleon Hill, a prominent citizen of Wise County. The scholarship was established to encourage students from the Department of Business and Economics to participate in honors studies and engage in business research and internships through special academic papers based upon the application of Hill's "Keys to Success" philosophy. Application requests should be made to the Office of Financial Aid.
was established in 2005 by family and friends of Sadie Stone Jones. The fund will provide scholarships for students demonstrating excellent academic achievement and need and majoring in any academic field. Preference is given to students from Wise County and the City of Norton . Students must maintain a 3.0 grade point average to be eligible for renewal.
was endowed by the Kiwanis Club of Norton in 2004. Scholarships shall be awarded on the basis of financial need and merit. The scholarship gives first preference to students from Norton, Virginia and second preference to students from Wise County.
was endowed in 2004 by the Virginia Generals Foundation, Inc. Four equal scholarships shall be awarded annually. Each of the four scholarships is named for beloved members of the Norton Lions Club; namely: Charles L. Daniels, Frank Fischer, Jr., Lester W. Hawk, and Glenn Hill. Students must be graduates of J. I. Burton High School, Norton, Virginia, be full-time students, in good academic standing, and scholarships may be renewable. The freshman recipients will be determined by the Office of Financial Aid, after consulting with the Lions Club of Norton, and additional scholarships shall be awarded by the UVa-Wise Scholarship Committee. Should any student elect not to remain at the University of Virginia 's College at Wise for the full four years or become academically ineligible for the scholarship, the Office of Financial Aid may select a replacement recipient from among students who are residents of Wise County or the City of Norton.
was established in honor of Claude and Agnes McMurray. Scholarships shall be awarded on the basis of financial need and merit. The scholarship gives first preference to students from Rye Cove and second preference to students from Scott County.
was established by Bob Murray in 2004. Scholarships shall be awarded to students participating in intercollegiate athletics. Preference will be given to students from coal producing counties. Financial need shall be considered in awarding of scholarships, and scholarships may be renewable.
The Willie Joe and Laura Lyon Peters Scholarship Fund was established in 2004 through a bequest from Laura Lyon Peters. These scholarships will be awarded to students from John I. Burton High School and Powell Valley High School. Scholarships are merit and need based.
was established in 2004 by Kent Rigg. Scholarships will be awarded to students from Southwest Virginia participating in intercollegiate athletics. Financial need shall be considered in the awarding of scholarships, and scholarships may be renewed.
was established via a bequest from Harold C. Wright in honor and in memory of Harold C. Wright, Sally June Cross Wright, B.K. Wright, and Goldie Eva McClannahan Wright. Scholarships will be awarded to deserving students from the Southwest Virginia counties of Washington, Russell, Scott, Lee, Dickenson, Wise, and Buchanan, and from the cities of Norton, Virginia , Bristol, Virginia, and Bristol, Tennessee. Scholarship recipients shall be selected by a ten-member selection committee consisting of a representative from each of the above named counties and cities. The initial selection committee shall be appointed by the Trustee of the Harold C. Wright Trust, and any vacancies on the committee shall thereafter be filled by majority vote of the remaining committee members, with each county maintaining representation at all times.
