How to Join

Fraternity Recruitment

Fraternity Recruitment is held at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters. All students interested in joining a fraternity must complete the fraternity recruitment registration form in order for eligibility to be checked. To be eligible to join a fraternity, a UVa-Wise male student must be either 1) an upperclass student or second semester freshman with a 2.25 cumulative GPA or 2)a first semester freshmen with a 2.5 high school academic GPA (as determined by the Office of Admissions). In addition to the standard recruitment periods, fraternities may offer continuous open bids (COBs) to eligible students following the end of the formal or informal recruitment period. The recruitment process is completely alcohol and substance free and allows men to visit multiple chapters over the course of a week so they can make the best decision on the fraternity that best fits their values and life. Please note that there is no guarantee that a participant will receive a bid to join a fraternity.

Sorority Recruitment--PHC Sororities Only (excludes Delta Sigma Theta)

In order to join a sorority, a UVa-Wise female student must be either 1) an upperclass student or second semester freshman with a 2.3 cumulative GPA or 2)a first semester freshmen with a 2.5 high school academic GPA (as determined by the Office of Admissions). Please note that some sororities have higher GPA requirements than the College standard.

Sorority recruitment is a formal and structured process sponsored by the Panhellenic Council (PHC). Registration is required in order to participate in PHC recruitment. Events are held at night and do not conflict with class times (recruitment events begin at 9pm and end by 11pm).  Participants visit each chapter on the first day of recruitment, known as the Sorority Meet & Greet and then have an opportunity to visit the other chapters through a series of events over the next several days. Recruitment is a mutual selection process, meaning that you must have an invested interest in a sorority and them in your possible membership. It is strongly recommended that you attend every event during the recruitment process. The final night of sorority recruitment is an invitation only event known as Preference Night.

During formal recruitment (usually held during the fall semester), potential new members rank their chapter choices and the sororities submit a preference list at the conclusion of Preference Night. To promote equity and fairness in the recruitment process, each sorority is permitted to pledge a maximum number of women, so a “bid matching” process is held to determine which chapter each potential new member will join. While most participants receive a bid to join their first choice sorority, that it not always the case. Nor is it guaranteed that a participant will receive a bid to join an organization.
