Leech Wins Award
UVa-Wise's chapter of the National Society of Leadership and Success has given professor Donald Leech its Excellence in Teaching Award for 2011-2012. Leech is a very popular professor whose other college activities include coaching the cross country team.
History Undergraduate Awards
The History Department presented awards to its best undergraduate students on Sunday, April 22.
Phi Alpha Theta Initiation
On Thursday, April 19, 2012, seven new members of Phi Alpha Theta were initiated into the most prestigious honor society in History. The new members are: Laken Branson, Jessilyn Strauss, Matthew Donlevy, Sam Poole, Murphy Mullins, Amondre Johnson, and Taylor Bryan.
Six Present at Lynchburg College
On Saturday, March 31, six UVa-Wise History students presented their research at Phi Alpha Theta's Virginia regional conference. With twelve colleges represented and sixty papers given, the UVa-Wise students competed admirably against the best of their peers in the state. Those traveling to Lynchburg were Amondre Johnson, Caleb Greene, Murphy Mullins, Karl DeLuca, Jessilynn Strauss, and Lloyd Tomlinson. Although Wycliffe Farquarson was unable to travel to Lynchburg, Jessilynn Strauss read her paper at the conference.

New member of the History Department, Religious Studies Professor Witold Wolny, has recently published an article in the International Journal of Humanities and Social Science (IJHSS), Vol. 2 No. 5; March 2012, entitled "What, How, and Why: The Geertzian Definition of Religion and Neurotheological Project on Meta and Megatheology."
Election Talk for an Election Year
History Department and “Friends of Buck and Stan” to present series on elections
The History Department will offer a series of talks on historical presidential elections during the coming year. The first presentation on Thursday, April 19th, will be by former UVA-Wise History Professor Brian S. Wills, who will talk about the crucial election of 1860. Wills' talk is sponsored by UVa-Wise's Appalachian Warfare grant.
Religious Studies Minor Added
The History and Philosophy Department has added a minor in Religious Studies to its curriculum. The minor requires 18 hours of religious studies courses. Selected courses in areas such as history, philosophy, psychology and sociology may be used to satisfy the minor. Dr. Witold Wolny, who has moved over to the History department from Language and Literature will coordinate the minor.

On Saturday, November 19, Dr. McKnight took his Civil War and Reconstruction class and War and Memory class on a field trip to the site of the Battle of Wyerman's Mill, Cumberland Gap National Park, the Abraham Lincoln Library and Museum, and the Wildcat Mountain Battlefield. Here are the photos...
Saltville Battlefield Tour
Dr. McKnight's Civil War and Reconstruction class and War and Memory classes spent Sunday, September 11, walking the field at Saltville. During the trip, the group visited the Museum of the Middle Appalachians and stopped at numerous points to discuss and evaluate the events of October 2, 1864.
Appalachian Warfare Grant
The department has recently learned that the Slemp Foundation has given a grant of $100,000 for increasing the visibility of the Appalachian Civil War experience. Through this grant, Appalachian Warfare, there will be K-12 initiatives, historical travel, a speaker series, among other programs.
