Summer Program in England

May 20th - May 31st 2008

Program Overview

This program is designed to introduce students to the rich cultural heritage of England beyond the metropolis of London. England’s beautiful countryside and well-preserved market towns are the perfect classrooms for exploring British art, architecture, history, and literature. To facilitate an understanding of the different periods of English history—and their accompanying artistic and architectural styles—we will visit representative sites from the Middle Ages (Salisbury), Renaissance (Stratford-upon-Avon), and Eighteenth Century (Bath). From these city bases, we will also explore Neolithic and Roman sites.

Salisbury

An unspoiled village in the fabled English countryside. Its gothic cathedral, great hall, and quaint churches are vivid reminders of Salisbury’s medieval heritage. We will also visit nearby Wilton House, featured in the movie Pride and Prejudice (2005), and that most iconic of English sites: Stonehenge.

Bath

The center of fashionable life in 18th Century England. Its elegant Georgian architecture, upscale restaurants, and fine shopping continue to impress. We will tour the Roman baths (that initially made Bath a magnet for the well-to-do), visit the 18th Century Assembly Rooms, see inside an actual Georgian apartment, and check out the Jane Austen Centre. We will also take high tea and go on a ghost walk.

Stratford-upon-Avon

A well-preserved market town in the Midlands. Stratford-upon-Avon is well-known as the birthplace and hometown of one William Shakespeare. We will visit a variety of surviving Tudor buildings that have connections with the Bard (including the house in which he was born). We will also take a day trip to what has been called “the finest castle in England”: Warwick Castle.

William Shakespeare

In addition to visiting several Shakespeare sites in Stratford-upon-Avon, we will also take in a play at the world-renowned Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

Jane Austen

Austen lived in Bath for 5 years and used it as the setting of 2 of her novels.  We will explore some of these literary and biographical sites, and also visit the exhibits (and stellar gift shop) at the Jane Austen Centre

George Herbert

The 17th Century religious poet served as the parson of a small church on the outskirts of Salisbury.  We will visit his parish church and pause before his humble grave

Westminster Abbey

Before departing London at the end of the trip, we will visit Westminster Abbey and see the tombs and monuments of a profusion of literary greats, including Chaucer, Spenser, Blake, Byron, Keats, Wordsworth, Marlowe, Milton, Thackeray, and the Brontes.
