UVa-Wise to host 11th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day March Jan. 15

Charles Craig
Charles Craig, Sr.

“Keep the Flame Alive” on Jan. 15 by joining in the 11th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day festivities sponsored by The University of Virginia’s College at Wise.

The community is invited to participate in the service as the life of Dr. King is remembered and celebrated. The festivities – which occur this year on Dr. King’s actual birthday – begin at 5:30 p.m. with a free supper at the First Church of God in Wise, with entertainment by the UVa-Wise Jazz Ensemble. At 6:30 p.m. a commemorative march will be held along Main Street in Wise. The march will begin at the First Church of God and conclude at Wise Baptist Church, where the formal program will commence at 7 p.m. The UVa-Wise jazz ensemble will lead marchers with traditional New Orleans street music.

The program will include a keynote presentation and special musical performance by Charles Craig, Sr., an accomplished jazz and gospel pianist and minister of music.

A native of Norfolk and a childhood resident of Chicago, Craig began playing the piano at age 6. Craig was a student of Berklee College of Music in Boston, and he has performed live on Black Entertainment Television (BET) and in various gospel and jazz music festivals in Australia, Canada, Europe and the United States.

Following the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day observance in January, UVa-Wise will present a variety of events to commemorate Black History Month in February, including a presentation of “Dar He: The Lynching of Emmett Till” by Mike Wiley and a special presentation by James McBride, author of “The Color of Water,” the novel read by all incoming freshmen as part of the College’s shared reading experience.

For more information about Martin Luther King Day activities or about Black History Month events, contact the Office of College Relations at (276) 328-0130.
