Degree Program: RN to BSN

 

Description of Major

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing requires completion of specific general education requirements

that all students who graduate

from UVa-Wise must meet, as well as completion of upper division nursing major requirements.

Admission

Applicants who met the following criteria are eligible for admission into the nursing major with

junior status:

• Graduation from a state-approved nursing program from a regionally accredited community

college or hospital school of nursing
• Completion of 20 or more of the 51 semester hours of general education required for

graduation with a grade of C or above
• Cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or above for all prior academic (non-
nursing) work and a 2.3 (C+) or above for all prior nursing course work
• Licensure as a registered nurse in one or more states (Must be licensed in states where clinical

experiences are conducted)
• Successful completion of the NCLEX-RN examination prior to enrolling in upper division clinical

nursing courses
• Characteristics consistent with acceptable academic study and professional practice

Applicants to the program follow regular College admission procedures. In
addition, as transfer students, they must submit the following:

• Official transcripts of all academic work completed at other academic institutions they attended

including hospital schools of nursing
• Registration number and expiration date of license to practice nursing

 

Lower division courses in nursing by transfer from a community college or validation of diploma program course work

28 credit hours

General education requirements (Thirty-four of these credits may be transferred from a community college)

51 credit hours

Nursing major (Includes upper division electives)

41 credit hours

TOTAL

120 credit hours

Required Courses

 

BACCALAUREATE DEGREE IN NURSING WITH A LEADERSHIP MINOR

 

  • Minimum of 15 semester hours of upper-level courses completed in the major.
  • Completion of at least 45 semester hours through UVA-Wise.
  • A minor includes at least 18 semester hours in the chosen discipline, 12 hours of

    which must be in courses at the 300-level or above.

  • A course applied to requirements for the major may not be applied to requirements

    for the minor.

  • Graduation requires a minimum of 120 semester hours.
  • Graduation requires at least 58 semester hours in a regionally accredited four-year

    college or university.

  • Leadership Studies Minor (Interdisciplinary): 18 credit hours

 

 

Priority Dates for Financial Aid for transfer students.

 

All students should complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). 

Available on-line and hard copies from the financial aid office.  Students can

complete after January 1 each year.

PRIORITY DATES FOR TRANSFER STUDENTS TO QUALIFY FOR NEED AND

MERIT BASED FINANCIAL AID.

    NEED BASED AID

    Must be admitted to the college by May 1st .

    Must have the results of their FAFSA by May 1st .  Need to submit

    FAFSA by February 15 or as soon as possible before or after that date.

      MERIT BASED AID (SCHOLARSHIPS) .

      Must be admitted to the college by April 1st

      Must have a general scholarship application on file by April 1st

    We encourage all students to submit a FAFSA application and apply for

    both need based and merit based aid.
