item from the UVa-Wise Strategic Plan:
Distance Education programs at UVa-Wise
Responsible: Gil Blackburn & Keith Fowlkes
Develop a comprehensive program for distance education for degree seeking students as well as non-traditional students seeking professional development opportunities
Distance education methods and tools have developed over the past 10 years in ways that have made them much more viable and credible to mainstream higher education. Many very reputable institutions of higher learning have adopted successful distance education programs using web, audio and video-based technologies. These institutions have found that, for certain groups of students, distance education is a quality method of educational delivery and can reach groups of potential students who otherwise would not continue into higher education for various reasons.
UVa-Wise has offered online courses for credit for many years. The College has the faculty experience, equipment, software and network capacity to sustain and increase (to some degree) the number of online courses. The larger question is how UVa-Wise should approach this new style of educational delivery in a consistent and intentional way. The College needs a long-range strategic plan for distance education including 1.) the scope of degree work and continuing education programs offered, 2.) comprehensive academic standards and administrative policies, 3.) faculty teaching standards, accountabilities, and goals, and 4.) financial model for operations (among others).
