Policies & Security : Netbadge
NetBadge - ID Verification is now required
The University now requires “Enhanced” NetBadge to ensure compliance with the SSN Initiative. State agency compliance is required by June 2010. UVa-Wise has been given the capability to do the required ID verification process on campus.
Susan Herron, IT Security and Policy Coordinator, is our local administrator of the University’s Identification Verification process and the issuing of the required code to set up your Enhanced NetBadge.
What is Enhanced NetBadge?
A NetBadge is an electronic identification “badge” that is issued to your Web browser when you log into the NetBadge service. NetBadge verifies your identity as a valid user of the Web resource you are trying to access, using your University computing ID and password credentials.
“Enhanced” NetBadge is a higher-security edition of NetBadge that will look slightly different from the “original” NetBadge and increase protection of your sensitive personal data (i.e. no longer use SSN). To use “Enhanced” NetBadge requires verification of identity through a process known as Identity Verification.
Why you need an “Enhanced” NetBadge account
At UVa, there are 3 levels of identity assurance, depending upon the sensitivity of the data you are attempting to access. Systems which require “Enhanced” NetBadge now or in the near future include Oracle; the Integrated System; and UVa’s Student Information System. Other systems which require NetBadge login include, but are not limited to: on-line training modules Security Awareness, Search Committee, Preventing Sexual Harassment, and Preventing Employment Discrimination.
Acceptable forms of Identification
University policy requires one of the following forms of identification for NetBadge
accounts:
- US-issued drivers license
- US-issued military ID
- Passport (foreign or domestic)
- US-Department of Homeland Security Cards containing Photo and Date of Birth:
- Lawful Permanent Residence Card (formerly “Green Card”)
- Employment Authorization Card (EAD)
Please Note: The UVa-Wise CAVS CARD (old or new) is not an acceptable form of identification.
How to complete Identity Verification
You must come in person to 281 IT Center with the following documentation required by the University to complete the process.
- A government issued ID card – see the Acceptable forms list
- A copy of the “Personal Information” page printed from your Integrated System UVa Employee Self-Service section
- A signed Electronic Access Agreement if you have not already provided one
