IT Happens

Read all about IT…

This is the end of spring semester issue of IT Happens.  Because this time of year is jam packed with activities and demands on time this issue will be a bit briefer than usual.

In this issue…

we will cover:  personnel, summer IT work events, PowerPoint tips and tricks, and lots more.

Today we’re all Hokies!

The staff of OIT would like to join the countless thousands who wish to offer their heartfelt condolences’ to our families and friends at Virginia Tech.  Our thoughts, prayers and support go with you as you continue and heal.

Quote of the Month:

"It would appear that we have reached the limits of what it is possible to achieve with computer technology, although one should be careful with such statements, as they tend to sound pretty silly in 5 years."

                            John Von Neumann (ca. 1949)

IT Personnel changes/additions

Join us in congratulating Kristi McKinney nee Ryan on her marriage to Aaron March 17, 2007.  Kristi, we wish you and Aaron all the best in your life together.

We are also please to welcome Alison Ray to the OIT group as the Production Assistant in Media Relations.  Welcome aboard Alison.

The next few months campus networking will be a regular “hive” of activity for the OIT department.  There will be a migration to Microsoft Exchange during the last of May and the first part of June

Busy, Busy, Busy…

which includes campus wide use of Outlook / Outlook Web access.  The old mail server will be available for 6-8 months to allow time for users to move their mail messages etc.  Don’t procrastinate and miss the opportunity to save your important e-mails.

Cabling and switches are being installed to create a 10 GbE (Gigabit Ethernet) switched Ethernet fiber optic backbone to provide the level of network service to support an ever-increasing dependency on high-bandwidth applications and interconnectivity for administration, instruction, research, and collaboration.

Details on projects will be provided on the OIT web page.  Please check frequently for updates and status of on-going projects.

Did you know...

that once you display information on the Internet it becomes public information even if you think that you are only publishing it in a private location.  It can be copied and published virtually anywhere with or without your knowledge and/or consent.  Use discretion when making a decision to put pictures, letters, etc. on the Internet.  Ask yourself if there is anyone that you would be embarrassed to have seen it, if the answer is yes …don’t do it.  You can always put it out there later, but just try to get it back.

That having been said…

Danger!!!

You and your friends are not the only ones who can log onto FaceBook and MySpace.

At last…

the Vice Chancellor for the Information Technology group is here!  The announcement was made on February 26th that J. Keith Fowlkes will be filling the new position.  Mr. Fowlkes assumed his duties May 14th.  We welcome him and his family to the University of Virginia’s College at Wise and the community.

Mr. Fowlkes comes to us from Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, Indiana.  He is accompanied by his wife, Talitha, his son, Grayson, who is five and his daughter, Teagan, who is three.  Please feel free to stop by and extend a personal welcome to the campus and community or email him at fowlkes@uvawise.edu.

On a Sad/Glad Note…

We the OIT group would like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to Sheila Cox-Combs who admirably filled the role of interim CIO while the search for a suitable Vice-Chancellor/CIO was found.  Sheila assumed the duties of interim CIO almost a year ago in addition to her other campus duties.  She has juggled the multiple hats with unparalleled aplomb.  So thank you, Sheila, for a job well done.

Tips and/or Tricks…

In addition, to the tips and tricks that were presented in the last newsletter, here are some keyboard shortcuts that you can use with most of the MS Office Suite but some are specifically for use within PowerPoint.

Keeping Up…

The newsletter will continue throughout the summer months so make sure that you check your e-mail to keep up-to-date on what’s going on with the Office of Information Technology here at UVa-Wise.

Congratulations

Congratulations, graduating seniors!  We are proud of you all.  The OIT group would like to extend best wishes for all your future endeavors.
