Housing & Residence Life at UVa-Wise provides students with numerous leadership opportunities. These include the Community Councils (CCs), Residence Hall Association (RHA), National Residence Hall Honoray (NRHH), and serving as either a Resident Advisor (RA) or Head Resident Advisor (HRA). Learn more about each of these opportunities below.
Community Councils (CCs)
The Community Councils are an elected form of hall government and are a departmental programming body. All students living in a community are welcome and encouraged to participate in that community's council. Each council is responsible for activities and programs to promote a positive living environment and to develop a sense of community within the larger living community.
Residence Hall Association (RHA)
The UVa-Wise RHA is the elected 'voice' of the residential students. Responsibilities include planning and hosting activities and programs to promote a positive living-learning environment. RHA is affiliated with the following state, regional and national collegiate residence hall associations -- VACURH, SAACURH and NACURH.
RHA conducts several annual fundraisers to provide residential students with reasonably-priced linen and shower kits, as well as surprises from home to welcome you to campus, celebrate your birthday and help de-stress during final exams.
Membership in RHA is open to all residential students. A single voting representative to RHA is elected by each floor/hall at the start of the academic year.
National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH)
The NRHH chapter at UVa-Wise recognizes the top 1% of residential student leaders. These students have contributed vast amounts of time and energy to the residence life program through their numerous involvements including, but not limited to, RA and RD positions, RHA, program and conference participation, and the Campus Judicial Board.
NRHH also celebrates the various contributions to residence life from students, faculty and staff through its OTM (of the month) recognitions. General and program OTM award winners are announced each month.
NRHH membership is by nomination only. Nominations are solicited each semester and inductees are recognized in an induction ceremony during the semester of induction.
Resident Advisors (RAs)
Resident Advisors are peers in the residence halls who have trained to serve as resources, peer counselors and community builders. RAs coordinate educational, social and diversity programming initiatives for the members of their respective floors/halls, mediate roommate conflicts, enforce College policy, participate in an on-call duty rotation. RAs are also instrumental in assisting first-year students with their transition to college and residential life.
RA applications are available each spring semester for the coming academic year. Compensation for RAs includes a monthly stipend and half of the board rate. If space permits, RAs may elect to maintain a single room.
