'ADVICE & A SLICE'
Career Services at The University of Virginia's College at Wise recognizes the importance of involving employers in what we do beyond providing job opportunities for students and alumni. Advice and a Slice is a way for employers to be involved in the career development of students by assisting in educating students about the job search process. Through this program, employers are invited to campus to speak on a topic of their choice, either specific to their industry or a general career development issue. An example would be a pharmaceutical representative for a drug company speaking on how to break into that industry and giving guidance to students on how to build their resume, how to gain experience, what the interview process is like, etc. General issues could be how to write an effective resume, office etiquette once in the workplace, or ways to be financially responsible once students are earning a salary. This is a relaxed forum that makes students feel comfortable with employers and gives them a chance to speak to experts.
The program is very easy: employers provide the pizza, that’s where the slice comes in, and career services will provide the facility and drinks. Students will pre-register through the Career Services office to get an accurate number of those attending.
This is an excellent way for employers to interact with potential candidates and to build a positive relationship with these candidates. Employers are able to promote their organization, keep their names on the minds of students and alumni, all while helping our students be successful in their job search, no matter where it might take them. We believe that this will be a most successful way for employers to “pick” top candidates and for students and alumni to learn more about the opportunities that await them here in Wise County.
