Health Services at UVa-Wise provides students, faculty, and staff with a comprehensive health care program utilizing campus and community resources.

Campus Clinic
For those minor aches, pains, and coughs, students can visit the Campus Clinic in Health Services at no charge. Student fees provide for the services of our full-time registered nurse. Office hours are 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday.

Health counseling also is provided on a variety of topics, including STD's, HIV, colds & flu, poison ivy, and nutrition. Additional services include student health assessments, athletic physicals, allergy shots, minor first-aid treatments, blood pressure checks, and over-the-counter medications (including Tylenol, Advil, throat lozenges, cold medicines, etc.).  Visit Health Services today for these free services.

Students may also schedule an appointment at the Campus Clinic for on-campus services provided by the Wise County Health Department each Monday and Thursday. These services, available 9:00 am - 3:00 pm, include STD/HIV screening for males and females, breast exams, pap tests, pregnancy tests, birth control pills, and Family Planning & Counseling. Fees for these services are income-based (typically there is no fee).

H1N1 (Swine) Flu News

The College’s Crisis Management Team would like for each of you to be informed regarding the novel H1N1 flu.  Novel H1N1 flu, also known as swine flu, has become more prevalent across the United States in recent months.  More so, this flu is infecting 19- to 24-year olds at a higher rate.

In accordance with Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Virginia Department of Health (VDH) communications, it is recommended that for the next several months you continue to practice the following preventative measures:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, or use alcohol-based hand sanitizers and wipes
  • Cover your coughs and sneezes
  • Don’t touch your mouth, eyes or nose
  • Do a daily wipe-down of your telephone, keyboard, desk, and doorknob with household cleaners/wipes to reduce germs on surfaces

Please be reminded that the typical flu-like symptoms include headache, chills, body aches, fatigue, dry cough, sore throat, stuffy nose, and a fever.  Additionally, if you do become sick with the flu, stay home to rest and prevent spreading the illness.  If you remain fever-free, including being off any fever-reducing medications, for a 24-hour period, you may resume normal activity without fear of spreading the flu.

Should you have questions, please contact Sheila Cantrell, RN, in Health Services at 276-328-0193 or scantrell@uvawise.edu.  Additionally, you may visit the CDC (www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/) and VDH (www.vdh.state.va.us/) websites.

  • H1N1 vaccinations will be available on Tuesday, November 3.  They are free for faculty, staff & students.  Pre-registration is required by Thursday, October 29 and vaccinations will be available while supplies last.  Students under 18 years of age must have written permission from parent/guardian.
