RICHMOND, Va. - - UVa-Wise improved its record to 9-9 on Tuesday with a 3-0 (25-5, 25-18, 25-25-19) road victory over Virginia Union. The Cavaliers posted an impressive .349 hitting percentage in the match as the visitors tallied 36 kills against just seven errors in completing the season sweep over the Panthers.
DANIELS, W.Va. – The UVa-Wise women's golf team traveled to Daniels, West Virgina to compete in the MEC Championship this week. The Cavaliers finished eighth in the conference championship with an overall three-day score of 1171. Makenzie Cluesman led for UVa-Wise and finished 19th with an overall three-day score of 270. Notre Dame College took home the title with a team score of 1006.
Storylines – The Glenville State GameA late second touchdown by Glenville State gave the school its biggest win of the season last week, a 33-30 win over the University of Charleston. Prior to the victory, the Pioneers had lost four of their first five games to start the season. Glenville State ranks second in the Mountain East Conference in rushing at 214.5 rushing yards per game and first in average yards per carry at 5.2. Despite their success on the ground, the Pioneers turned to the air attack in the win over the Golden Eagles. Quarterback Sean Steele connected on 22 of 39 pass attempts for 323 yards and two touchdown passes in the victory. Coach David Hutchinson's club was picked to finish fourth in the MEC by a preseason poll voted on by the league's coaches.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. - - The UVa-Wise women's tennis team traveled to Charleston, West Virginia Saturday to take on the University of Charleston. The Golden Eagles (5-2, 5-2 MEC) did not lose a set against the Cavaliers (6-7, 4-3 MEC) in posting the 9-0 win.
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - - Shepherd University entered Saturday's Mountain East Conference game ranked ninth in the latest NCAA Division II AFCA Poll and coach Monte Cater's team lived up to its billing with a 51-0 win over UVa-Wise at Ram Stadium. The shutout was the second of the season for the Rams as the Cavaliers mustered just 107 yards of total offense against the top ranked defensive unit in the nation.

WISE - - Five UVa-Wise softball players have been named scholar athletes by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. Sarah Wiltshire, Christina Ziemba, Allyssa Zebrowski, Kristina Romualdo, Charity Lawson, and Rachel Hawks all were named to the team for the performance on the field and in the classroom.

Junior Blake Blizard led UVa-Wise with a second place finish in the tournament with a score of 71. Day two of the event was cancelled due to rain.

The Rams enter ranked ninth in the latest AFCA Coaches Poll and have never lost a Mountain East Conference game. Known for its defense, Shepherd has lived up to its billing through the first half of 2014. In five games, opponents have scored just 42 points for an 8.4 points per game average. The two schools share three common opponents, Shepherd defeated those opponents by an average of 31 points while UVa-Wise was defeated by the opponents by an average of 14.3 points per contest.
ATHENS, W.Va. - - UVa-Wise won its third consecutive Mountain East Conference women's tennis match on Saturday with a 9-0 victory at Concord. Junetta Nuckles won her 10th straight singles match and improved to 5-0 in singles play against MEC opponents while Rose Bennett improved to 4-0 in MEC singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 win.

WISE - - UVa-Wise ran its home winning streak to four with a 3-2 (26-24, 18-25, 25-16, 17-25, 15-11) Mountain East Conference win over Concord University on Tuesday. Erin Anderson delivered a season-high 15 kills in the victory for UVa-Wise while Karley turned in a double-double with 24 kills and 17 digs.
CLEVELAND, OHIO – The UVa-Wise men's golf team traveled to Cleveland, Ohio to compete in the MEC Fall Classic this week. The Cavaliers finished 11th with an overall score of 689 in the tournament. Freshman Cody Large led UVa-Wise with a 23rd place finish with a two-day score of 164. West Liberty University took home the title with a team score of 615.
