WISE - - Mistakes proved costly on Saturday as UVa-Wise was shutout in the second half for a second consecutive week in a 23-7 loss to West Virginia Wesleyan at Carl Smith Stadium. The Cavaliers missed two field goals, had another field goal attempt botched on a poor snap-hold exchange, and dropped a pair of touchdowns in the home opener.
ELKINS, W.Va. - - UVa-Wise split a pair of matches on day one of the Davis and Elkins Invitational. In the opener, the Cavaliers used a match-high 15 kills from Lindsey Tucker and a combined 40 assists from Ashley Hooven and Veronica Sanchez to defeat Bluefield State 3-1 (25-15, 24-26, 25-17, 25-19). In the finale, UVa-Wise dropped a 3-0 (25-17, 28-26, 25-18) decision to Slippery Rock University.
WISE, Va. – Visiting West Liberty University claimed an 8-1 victory over the Cavaliers (1-2, 1-1 MEC) in the Mountain East Conference women's tennis action on Friday and gave the Cavs its first conference loss. UVa-Wise's Junetta Nuckels claimed the only win for the Cavaliers against the Hilltoppers.
WISE - - Fans attending Saturday's home football opener against West Virginia Wesleyan are encouraged to arrive early. The first 300 fans that enter Carl Smith Stadium will receive a free "Red Out T-Shirt" compliments of the athletic department.

He also led the MEC in total tackles with 17.Freshman Carlton Griffith led the Cavaliers in rushing with 75 yards and a touchdown in his first collegiate game.Jeremiah Cooke and Marcus Jones joined Chris Flood as players with double-digit tackles for UVa-Wise last week. Cooke tallied eight solo stops as part of his 10 tackle performance while Jones finished with six solo tackles and four assisted tackles in finishing with 10 tackles.Saturday's game will be the only home game UVa-Wise will play in the month of September. Overall, the Cavs play three of the season's first four games away from Carl Smith Stadium.Terrence Younger was quarterback Ty Ryans' favorite target in week one. Younger caught five passes for 85 yards, including a 46-yard reception.In addition to his strong punting day, Trent Martin booted a pair of field goals at Urbana. Martin's second field goal was a 45-yard make that pulled UVa-Wise to within one point at 14-13 late in the second quarter.UVa-Wise's inability to win the turnover once again proved to be costly. Urbana forced two turnovers in the season opener while UVa-Wise did not force turnover. The Cavaliers have now gone 16 games since the team last won the turnover battle in a contest. UVa-Wise last committed fewer turnovers than its opponent in a 35-21 win over Bluefield College in 2012.

WISE - - The UVa-Wise women's tennis team opened the home portion of its fall season in a dramatic fashion with a 5-4 win over conference foe West Virginia Wesleyan College.
MECHANICSVILLE, Ohio - - Makenzie Cluesman carded an 81 on day one of the Mountain East Conference North Tournament en route to a fifth place finish as an individual. Cluesman's performance led UVa-Wise to a seventh place finish in the event that was won by Wheeling Jesuit University.
URBANA, Ohio - - Urbana University shutout UVa-Wise in the second half and used a 21-yard touchdown pass from Cale Burdyshaw to Marc Johnson in the fourth quarter to post a 24-13 victory in the season opener for both schools at Urbana University Stadium on Saturday. The Blue Knights rushed the ball 47 times for 217 yards, 104 of which came from Burdyshaw in the win. The strong rushing performance allowed the host to overcome 13 penalties which marked off 124 yards.
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - - Carson Newman did not lose a set to UVa-Wise in women's tennis action on Saturday. Bailey Christoforatos had the strongest showing of the day for the Cavaliers as she lost 6-2, 6-3 in number three singles to Patricia Guerreiro.
Corbin, Ky. – The UVa-Wise men's golf team opened up the fall portion of its schedule with a ninth place finish at the Bill Sergent Invitational in Corbin, Kentucky. Cody Large in his first collegiate tournament led the Cavaliers with a 19th place finish with a two-day score of 153. Lindsey Wilson took home the title with a team score of 584. The Blue Raider had a pair of players tie for individual honors as Chris Butler and Ryan Nowe both shot a 144 to lead the field.
Wise, Va. - Behind a match-high 33 digs from Ana Calaza Union College held off a late UVa-Wise rally to score a 3-2 victory at the David J Prior Center on Thursday. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 2-0 lead as they won set one 25-17 before winning set two 25-22. The Cavaliers would win the next two sets by scores of 27-25 and 25-23 only to see the visitors win set five 15-10 to claim the non-conference victory.

WISE-- Coach Kristen Salyer and the UVa-Wise volleyball team will begin its second season in the Mountain East Conference this fall. While it being the second season of MEC play, the Cavaliers will be in what the school hopes to be the final year of a three-year transition process to NCAA Division II. During the transitional process, no UVa-Wise athletic team will be eligible to participate in postseason competition beyond the MEC Conference Tournament.

WISE - - UVa-Wise and local radio station WDIC AM-FM (1430 AM – 92.1 FM) have reached an agreement to provide local fans with play by play action of all 11 football games this fall. In addition, coach Dewey Lusk will be a weekly guest on the station's Sports Report Card Show. The show airs every Monday night at 6:00 pm in the fall.
WISE - - Kendall Rainey, Randy Hippeard and Ra'Shad Morgan will become the three newest members of the UVa-Wise Athletic Hall of Fame on Nov. 1 when the trio is inducted at halftime of the football game against Concord. With the induction of these three former student-athletes, a total of 48 past student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and contributors will be members of the exlusive club that held its first induction ceremony in 1998.
