Where is the Tutor Connection?
The Tutor Connection is housed in the Academic Support Services office which is located in the same space with Student Support Services and Disability Services on the first floor of Zehmer Hall, next to the Writing Center.
How do I apply to get a tutor?
Students can pick a request form from the box outside of the office's front door or print one from this site. The completed forms should be placed in the same outside box. Once a session information is available, the student will be emailed. Some tutoring is class-specific, so students should contact the tutor who visits their classroom or check with this office.
How much does it cost to get a tutor at the Tutor Connection?
Nothing. All services are free to students enrolled either full or part-time at the College. Note: the course for tutoring must be a course at the College. For someone outside of the College, the office will forward any interests on to tutors, however, costs are decided based on the individual tutor. These private sessions do not fall under the supervision or jurisdiction of the Tutor Connection or the College.
In what subjects can I receive tutoring?
Tutors are available in almost all disciplines and a student may request a tutor in any course. Every attempt is made to find a tutor for each request, but in some cases, a suitable tutor may not be available. Students are kept informed of any such dilemmas.
How quickly will my request be filled?
The office typically has requests filled within two weeks of submission. The process may take longer, however, depending on the availability of tutors and schedule flexibility.
Can I make more than one request?
Yes, students may request tutoring in more than one course. Note: requests for multiple subjects may take longer to process.
Can I request a specific tutor?
Students may request a specific tutor, but the Academic Coordinator makes the final decisions concerning tutoring assignments. Preferences will be taken into consideration, but are not guaranteed.
What kind of tutoring is offered?
The Tutor Connection offers small and large group tutoring.
What are the Tutor Connection office hours?
The Tutor Connection is open 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m (evening hours vary) during the fall and spring semesters.
Is tutoring available in the summer?
Yes, limited tutoring is available during the summer. Summer office hours are 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
What is my obligation once signed up for a tutor?
Students are obligated to attend all sessions that have been reserved for the semester. Violation of any policies may warrant the cancellation of services for the remainder of the semester.
How often can I get tutoring?
Students may request tutoring as often as needed, however, most sessions are two one-hour sessions per week. The Academic Coordinator will work with students to be as flexible and accommodating as possible.
Does the Tutor Connection offer drop-in tutoring?
Most sessions are set up by appointment only, but some drop-in tutoring is available. Students should check with the office about these times.
Do faculty tutor?
All tutoring is provided by peer tutors with the exception of some sessions offered by the Academic Coordinator. Faculty do refer students to be tutors and on occasion, are involved in the training of tutors.
What do I do if I cannot make a session?
Tutors and tutees should notify each other and the office as soon as there is a need to miss a scheduled session. In an emergency, this notification should take place as soon as possible. If a student misses three consecutive sessions without prior notice, he/she will be dropped and will have to meet with the Academic Coordinator to have services reinstated.
Can tutoring be conducted outside of the Tutor Connection?
All tutoring should occur in the office unless the Academic Coordinator gives prior consent to meet elsewhere.
How are tutors selected?
Tutors must be at least sophomores with an overall GPA of 3.0, at least a B average in the course to be tutored and be recommended by faculty members. Exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis. Tutors should also be model students who have good communication and organizational skills.
